The judicious use of spinal injections is sometimes needed to optimize recovery and control pain. Our physiatrists use therapies and medication prior to trying injections. This requires accurate diagnosis prior to the injection. Our methods are designed to minimize complications and avoid overusing these injections. We also use many of the injections as part of the work-up to aid in obtaining proper diagnosis.

These injections include:

• Lumbar transforaminal epidural injections (selective epidural injections)
• Lumbar selective nerve blocks
• Lumbar facet injections
• Sacroiliac joint injections
• Cervical facet injections
• Cervical transforaminal epidural injections (selective epidural injections)
• Cervical selective nerve blocks
• Discograms

Studies have shown good results for these in the correct patient population. This includes avoiding surgery in many cases including disc herniations and controlling pain in conditions like spinal stenosis. By using our treatment plans, we can work to alleviate our patient’s pain and help to prevent its return.
